The 1980's was a great decade for fashion. The romance and femininity of the "Prairie Look" carried over from the 1970's into the 80's, and there was a surge of Victorian Revival in fashion. Designers such as Jessica McClintock for Gunne Sax, Laura Ashley, Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis and Oscar de la Renta all tapped into the trend. This dressing gown from Oscar de la Renta is a perfect example of the look. This floral print robe has a soft blush pink background covered with clusters of peach and pink roses and lavender bows. It has a high-neck mandarin style collar, and buttons down the front with ten round pearl buttons. The sleeves are beautifully gathered at the shoulder which creates a beautiful puff sleeve, with full ruffles at the wrists. The princess cut bodice has two ruffles that cap over the shoulder and run down the front, ending just above the waistline. The bodice and cuff ruffles are trimmed with an inch of delicate ivory lace. There is also thin lace trim that runs around the collar and down each side of the front of the robe near the buttons and button holes. A tiny feminine detail that adds more charm. The skirt of the robe is gathered for fullness as it attaches to the more fitted bodice. The belt is of the same fabric and there are two string belt loops on either side, just above the waist. There is no fabric tag, but it has a nice thickness to it and is very soft; likely a synthetic velour. Although it is categorically a dressing gown / robe, it could easily be worn as a dress. I could see it paired with a pair of granny boots, lace stockings, a soft & feminine up-do, pearl earrings and matching clutch, a la Batsheva X Laura Ashley vibe. A lovely addition for the romantic vintage collector. The colors are a bit more vibrant than as they appear in photos, though the background color of the fabric is true. Other than some very faint discoloration on the underside of the lace on the cuffs, some minor pilling on the inside of the bodice, and the top stitching on two button holes near the waist weak (you may need to reinforce to keep it from unbuttoning, depending on fit), it's in excellent condition. Freshly laundered and ready to wrap up in.
