My mother called me when I first listed this vintage floral lamě brocade gown to tell me she did NOT like this dress, that it looked "dated". I told her I loved it and it would look amazing on the right person. A stylist with great vision could see the possibilities. . . as is, or with some simple alterations: imagine it strapless with a thigh-high slit? Or a dramatic high/low alteration to the skirt? Then Alicia Vikander walked the red carpet at the London premiere of Tomb Raider in a similar regal floral frock custom made by Louis Vuitton and I rested my case (see photo & reviews below).
This lovely ensemble hails from The St. Regis Room at the world famous Canadian Department Store "Simpson's"; founded in 1858 by Robert Simpson. The St. Regis Room "offered some of the most exclusive fashion collections in Canada. Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Yves Saint Laurent, Claude Montana, Courreges, and many others were featured in this luxury department." (courtesy of Wikipedia)
This ensemble has the heavy, luxurious feel of creations by said designers. The rich brocade is stunning with coral and pink lotus flowers embellished with shimmering gold detail and offset by deep olive green leaves against a champagne background. The bodice of the dress is a rich pink dupioni silk with hand-finished pink silk lining. The skirt of the dress is lined in ivory chiffon. The jacket is fully lined in a deep cranberry fabric.
Bust: 34" but darts would allow for larger cup or up to 38"
Shoulders: 14" across back
Hips: Open - A-line with generous pleats
Mid Shoulder to Waist (bodice length): 16 1/4"
Nape to hemline: 55"
Hemline circumference: 62"
Jewel Sleeve Length: Outer: 18" Inner: 10"
Length Nape to hem: 17"
Excellent to Mint. This ensemble is in remarkable condition and was most likely worn once and for a very short time. There are no fabric/care tags. There are three extremely faint markings: one under each arm and on the front of the bodice but they are SO faint I couldn't even get them to show up in a macro photo. Two pinholes along zipper mid-back but the overlap of the seam covers them.
"Alicia Vikander has been on a winning red carpet streak. . . for tonight’s premiere of the movie in London, the actress chose another show-stopping number from the French house. . . In fact the body-skimming floral look managed to toe the line between past and future overall. Geometric diamond jewelry punctuated Vikander’s look with a directional slant and sparkling finish." ~Vogue.com
"Of course, florals are a staple part of fashion whatever the season or event, but the thick satin fabric helps make them truly red-carpet worthy here."
