Shannon McLean "Cose Belle" ecru silk linen coat-dress, c1990s. Ms. McLean, a couture clothing & bridal designer, held court in her atelier located in an upper East Side New York apartment through the late 1990s. Her salon was "by appointment only" and she catered to "Marina Rust-ish junior socialites" whom she referred to as "very bourgie, very P.B." (as in Palm Beach). She favored simple, clean & minimalist lines made popular by such style icons as Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Babe Paley & Jacqueline Kennedy.
This double-breasted coat-dress is a perfect example of her less-is-more approach to style. Feather light silky soft linen with matching silk lining. Princess seams. Bound button holes. Single elbow darts. Empire waist effect & wide lapel collar. A little bit 1960s. A little bit Downton Abbey. A lot timeless style.
The Cose Belle Collection was, to our knowledge, handmade & custom-tailored for each client by Ms. McLean and her small staff. The #40 on the label may refer to a numerical system used by the the house rather than a size 40 as it measures much smaller.
