One of my favorite pieces in my vintage menswear collection. Fabulous black silk dressing gown / smoking robe with elegant art deco print. The silk has a rich weight to it and is luscious and cool to the touch. The print is on the diagonal, with what looks like small gold and silver block steps, dotted circles, diagonal slash marks and various lines of vertical (champagne?) bubbles in shades of coral. It's understated and not as busy as most art deco patterns tend to be. It's trimmed at opening, cuffs and top of pockets with gold silk piping. It has a left breast pocket (3.5" W x 4.5" D) and two front patch pockets at the hip line (5.5" x 5.5") . The collar is it's own piece which is attached to the generous shawl lapel of the robe and is reinforced with interfacing and quilted on the underside only, which helps it keep it's shape beautifully. The cuffs are also reinforced with light interfacing which gives them a thicker feel than the rest of the robe; they are stitched to the sleeve at the outside seam to help keep them in place. There are two patch belt loops for the black silk rope cord that serves as the belt. It probably had tassels back in the day, but now each end is tied off in a knot. Unlined, but the silk design shows through so it's just as lovely on the inside, just a fainter background. It's marked a 48 and is very generously cut. I included the picture of the label; I'm not sure if it says Chalons or Halons - it has a lions' head logo and then something in Arabic or Hindi (?) I did extensive research on the label but came up wanting. I strongly feel due to the pattern, style and rope belt that this is at the least a 1930's piece, if not 1920's. It's in excellent condition; remarkable, really. There is a silvery mark on the back right shoulder just left of where the sleeve seam meets the robe; it all depends on how the light hits it on how visible it is. It's not terribly visible when on and the photo I included makes it look far worse than it is. Hand laundered, steamed and ready to wear.
