Thanks to Madam Vice President Kamala Harris and former First Ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton - purple is having it's day in fashion. All three women wore a shade of purple to the inauguration ceremony of President Joe Biden on January 20, 2021. Fast fashion, more affordable, slightly different versions of the coats are popping up everywhere online. Most are mediocre quality, Made in China. This stunning Bromleigh coat, Made in the USA, is a completely different story.
The Bromleigh label first surfaces in 1909 in a advertisement for a blouse. Ads that followed always refer to the manufacturing of high-end outerwear. A 1949 newspaper advertises coats "Fashioned by "Bromleigh" of New York, makers of perfectly proportioned coats.", in 1955 "famous for tailoring, fit, and line for over a quarter century.", and in 1960 "The Bromleigh label means that accent is placed upon behind the seams construction. It also means a concentrated emphasis is put on fit and truly fine workmanship." (Source)
This coat testifies to that reputation. It's 100% wool in a beautiful plummy purple tone and lined in sumptuous garnet colored silky fabric. The coat is double breasted style, with six plum buttons edged with gold. Only the second row of buttons are working, the others are decorative to create the double breasted look. It's a classic overcoat style with a conservative dash of princess A-line flare to it. It has generous notched lapels. Two slit-style deep pockets. The original cuff tag is still stiched on, and there's a size & inventory tag pinned inside near the hemline; this coat was most likely never worn. It's immaculate inside and out; truly mint condition. It has a beautiful weight to it and the quality can not be overstated.
