This is one of the loveliest purses I've ever come across in my treasure hunting! The black mesh beading is interwoven into a layer of gold beneath so it literally shimmers & moves like liquid diamonds with the slightest movement. Whiting & Davis is one of the top mesh handbag manufacturers in the world; they've been at it since 1876 and the quality of their workmanship is indisputable. This c. 1950's bag is from their "Dazzle in the Dark Black Diamond Collection". The frame is brushed gold-tone with a matching 14" chain strap and the most spectacular raised closure with what looks like a large onyx set inside a bed of gold with a matching gold pull ring. Their iconic logo (see photo) & "Made in the USA" is etched on the inside of the frame as is the frame style number: 2982. Frames were used over various decades so the style number alone does not determine provenance. The purse is lined with black matte taffeta which is hand stitched to the frame. The bag measures 8" across base x 6.5" high x 1" deep at base but can hold quite a bit as the mesh is flexible yet has a lovely weight to it. A beautiful example of Whiting & Davis Co. mid-century bag in excellent, like-new condition.
